Session Overview
“Cultivating an Executive Director Mindset” explores the leadership qualities, strategic thinking, and personal discipline required to run a thriving nonprofit organization. Drawing from Alana Allen’s experience as a founder, executive director, and consultant, this conversation will break down how clarity of vision, confidence in decision-making, and a commitment to community impact shape strong nonprofit leadership. Listeners will gain practical insight on shifting from simply managing programs to leading with purpose, influence, and long-term sustainability.
Meet the Speaker
Alana V. Allen is an award-winning nonprofit leader and the founder and executive director of I Am A Queen, a youth development nonprofit in Greensboro, N.C. She is also the owner of Alana Knows Nonprofits Consulting, LLC, where she specializes in nonprofit development and grant writing. A native of Reidsville, N.C., Allen is a proud graduate of North Carolina A&T State University with a degree in journalism and mass communications. For 17 years, she has built a distinguished career in public relations, including serving three years as deputy press secretary for North Carolina’s first female governor, Beverly E. Perdue. Her community work began in 2009 when she founded I Am A Queen following a transformative prayer that freed her from childhood trauma and launched her mission to empower girls and women. Over 16 years, she has grown the organization into a thriving, year-round mentoring program for girls ages 10–18 focused on confidence, leadership, and service. I Am A Queen also inspires youth and families to give back through impactful charitable initiatives. Since its founding, the organization has touched the lives of more than 19,000 people across the Greensboro-High Point community.
