Session Overview

“Understanding and Strengthening Nonprofit Boards” explores the essential roles and responsibilities of board members in driving a nonprofit’s mission forward. This session equips participants with strategies to build stronger governance, enhance board engagement, and improve overall organizational effectiveness. Participants will gain practical tools to strengthen leadership, accountability, and long-term sustainability.

Meet the Speaker

Shanika Aiken is a nonprofit consultant, youth advocate, and community leader with a passion for empowering others to create lasting impact. She is the founder and Executive Director of The SAFE Organization (Self-esteem, Advocacy, Faith, and Education), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving youth in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and surrounding areas. A proud Claflin University graduate, Mrs. Aiken earned honors in Sociology and Criminal Justice Administration.

Through S. Aiken Consulting, Ms. Aiken helps organizations with nonprofit startup, program development, leadership training, and community engagement. She is also a certified Girl Circle facilitator and created the Youth Advisory Council, which provides girls ages 11–17 opportunities to lead, serve, and access scholarships. Ms. Aiken’s leadership has earned her recognition as a Hardee’s Hometown Hero and Molina Healthcare Community Champion.

Alongside her consulting and nonprofit work, Ms. Aiken and her husband, Marion, operate family-owned businesses that bring communities together. With a heart for service and a proven record of impact, Mrs. Aiken continues to inspire change and strengthen organizations.
